All are doing reasonably well at PG.  We’ve had much to be thankful for in August.  Rachel and Jeanette visited and Jack took the following group picture with all the residents.  Back row: Roger Cleveland, Mary Jane Pike, Rachel Potter, Jeanette Coker, Betty Lawrence, Jean Hagemeier and Teresa Goff.  Front row: Frances McPherson, Bea Jecmenek, Doris Crawford, Naomi Nicholson and Esther Potts.

Kathy and I had the privilege of taking Naomi with us to Milford NH convention.  She traveled well and really enjoyed herself.  She still glows when she talks about it.  The following pictures show her with the workers and riding a golf cart.  Craig Dean is driving the cart but I know who is in control! 🙂

Linda Ronhaar took Esther to Yellow Springs OH convention and for a visit with her relatives in OH.  Here’s the workers picture with Esther, and Esther with old friends Bill Houston and Duane Hettich at Morrow OH.

Visitors this month included Warren Berger, Shaun and Sandy Schleuter (from Washington state), Sharon and Sara, Emma and Joyce.

Two of our full-time staff, Brisy Valdez and Salena Thorburn are headed back to college this fall.  Salena will continue to work one shift on the weekends.  We’ve hired two new full-time girls from the local area, Andrea and Jennifer.  The picture below shows Andrea and Jennifer with Brisy.  The second picture is of Travis, Jamie and Aliyah Bolt.  Travis works at PG.

Dad (Jack), Karin and Don Waldo all had birthdays in early August.  Both our daughters, Karla (mother of the twins) and Karin are expecting!  So if all goes well, by May next year we’ll double the number of grandchildren we have from 2 to 4.  The second picture below shows Karin and her husband Patrick Kelleher, with Maren (one of Karla and Brendan’s twins).  Karin is the assistant manager at the Sr. residence, and Patrick is starting to work at PG also, so we’ll see a lot more of him.  Once Patrick starts, if everyone is there, there will be 5 of us working in the barn for 2 different small businesses – Don Waldo, Jason Munckton, Patrick Kelleher, Travis Bolt and myself.  We often head down to the Sr. residence for lunch with the residents.

So far the pecans are doing well.  There’s still a drought here, with less than half the rain we should have had to date, but Samuel keeps the irrigation systems going and the little rain we have had sure helps.  The Pawnee pecans should be ready for harvest by the end of September, with the other 4 types ready later in October.  We’ve had a good cutting of hay off of the hay field for the first time, so the farming activity is increasing.

Speaking of Naomi… at bible study this morning we read 1Th 5:26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.  She tossed a Hershey’s Silver Hershey's Kiss Squishy Candy Pillow at me and grinned like a mule eating huckleberry’s in the winter time!  I complained that it didn’t have any holes in it.  We need to be careful, Roger doesn’t approve of humor during bible study.

July 2013

All are doing fairly well at PG as July finishes.  The weather has been hot, but we’ve had some rain, so the pecans are doing well and everything is green.

Our daughter, Karla Furrow, comes to PG most Tuesdays with the twins, and teaches an exercise class.  Her in-laws, Ron and Anna Furrow, and their granddaughter Aubrey were with Karla for one of these visits in July.  Karla found out she was expecting again (only 1 this time), so we had everyone sign a long orange poster.  The following pictures show the exercise class, Furrows…

I’ve done fairly well in recent posts… not too many pictures of the twins!  I’m making up for it with this post!

Dale, Patty and Josh Maki have visited PG to see Patty’s mom, Frances McPherson.  Dale and Josh haven’t been well… Josh is doing much better.  Dale started treatments today.  Jason Munckton joined us in July.  He’s working with us in one of the small oilfield businesses we run from PG.  He’s shown below programming with Don Waldo.

Kenny and Salena had purchased fireworks for July 4th, and didn’t have a chance to use them, so last week they did a fireworks show for the residents.  We were surprised how many stayed up (or got up 🙂 to watch.

Kathy and I are traveling today with Naomi to Milford NH, for the convention starting tomorrow.  We haven’t been to Milford since we lived near there, 1980-1985.  Naomi is very excited to be going back.  Esther is to go back to Yellow Springs, OH, in a few weeks.

Everyone at PG is doing fairly well.  Teresa uses a wheel chair most of the time now, not because she can’t walk, but because she’s afraid of falling again.  When she needs to walk she does.  Esther had some bad days in June, but seems to be back to normal now.

We’ve had more changes in staff in June.  Virginia McKnight resigned, and Salena Thorburn joined the staff.  Salena is our son Kenny’s girlfriend, and is a full-time Aggie (student at Texas A&M), during the school year.  A&M is about 70 miles from PG, so Salena stays in the bunk house when she’s working.  She won’t be able to work full-time once school starts, but she’s hoping to continue working weekends.  Brisy is also planning on going to school full-time starting this fall, so we’ll be losing two out of four of our full-time staff.  The following pictures are of Virginia when she was leaving, and of Salena and Kenny.

Steve and Arlene Gates, And Aggie and Tom Borgeson visited from north central PA.  They know several of our residents.  Below they’re shown with Naomi.  Also, Don Reynolds spent a few days with us on his way from Korea back to Bolivia.  He knows Esther very well… told stories about her when he was a kid in north west Ohio… she cried at the good memories… sure hated to see him go!   He’s shown with Esther below.

Steve Arlene Naomi Angie DonEsther and Don

Doris turned 90 in June.  Now 6 of our 10 residents are 90 or over!  Kathy and I visited Kathy’s relatives in the Phoenix area including her aunt Marjorie Willumsen.  While with Marjorie we visited an assisted living home with 10 residents run by some of the friends.  One of the residents is Willis Propp, who was in our home in France in the early 90’s.  The following picture shows Kathy with Willis and Marjorie.

Walter and Arlis Craighton (Salena’s grandparents) and their son Les spent a few days at PG… we didn’t get their picture.

It’s exceptionally hot here, and we have about half of the average yearly precipitation, but so far the pecans are looking good.  Terry and Samuel have just begun irrigating the pecan trees from the lake.  Hopefully we won’t run out of water in the lake like we did in 2011!

No pictures of the twins… if you’re interested look at Brendan and Karla Furrow’s blog listed at the upper right.

Thanks,

Ken

Barbara finished her course in May.  Rita Miller came back down from Indiana and traveled with Barbara in a medical transport to a nursing home in Indiana.  Barbara was there less than a week when she died.  Rita told Barbara when they crossed the Texas line that they were leaving Texas, and Barbara clapped her hands!  She was glad to be going home in more ways than one.  If anyone would like notes from her funeral, contact me by email.  The following pictures show Rita, Leona, Virginia, Ken and Kathy at PG with a bouquet of flowers Rita made, and the medical transport which was used for Barbara.

The day after Barbara and Rita left, Teresa Goff fell and broke her hip.  They put in 3 screws, sent her to rehab, and then sent her home in just over 2 weeks.  She’s using a walker and wheel chair, but seems to be recovering fine.

Other visitors included Lorraine Pope and Betty Goss from San Antonio, and Jeffrey and Brigit Batson who visited Mary Jane.

Keith and Joyce Ann Freeman came to visit Barbara, but just missed her.  Here they are with our workers, Sara and Sharon.  Also, a picture of the turtles sunning themselves in the lake (Esther still calls it a river).

Kathy and the twins had birthdays in May (the first for the twins).  The pictures show Karin  and Kathy with a beautiful Italian Cream cake Mom (Leona) had made, and the twins playing on our “beach” at our Lake Conroe home.  Normally the water should be 3 ft higher, so we wouldn’t have a beach, but our drought conditions continue.

Union meeting followed by pot luck is always a big day for the residents.  Here’s they’re shown getting food (Patty Maki helping her Mom, Ann Newman helping Bea).  Also there’s a picture of Conchita and Samuel taken the same day.

Linda Ronharr (who was the manager at PG for the first few years) visited Frank Porter in the nursing home in Florida.  Also Ronda  (my sister who was the manager after Linda) and Mike were down from Arkansas (with their current “kids”).

Following up from last month on Mary Jane’s weeding… Dianne Barbour sent her the frog statue shown.  Unfortunately MJ keeps forgetting who sent it to her.  She started pulling up poison ivy recently!  The wild flowers finished up in May and now it’s hot!

April 2013

Barbara Hilligoss (93) went down quickly in April.  She was admitted to the hospital April 16th, moved to hospice the 22nd, and then to a nursing home on the 26th.  For several days in the hospital the local friends, PG staff, and our workers, sat with her 24/7, until the doctor was able to get her medications figured out.  Karen Wright came down from Indianapolis while she was in the hospital, then Janet Nicol (her niece) came down from Indiana for several days.  Now… Barbara still gets anxious when the pain medications wear off.  Most of the time she sleeps, eating and drinking very little.  Her family is trying to move her back to Indiana… not sure if that will work out or not.

Her roommate in the nursing home is a hoot… Erma is one of our best sources of information about Barbara.  She tells us when Barbara eats, when she sleeps, when she tries to get out of bed, and a lot more details you really don’t want to know!  She says Barbara had 15 visitors on Sunday (which is probably right).  She wonders why someone from Indiana has so many friends here.  She speaks loudly and freely… wondering if we’re a “close group”.

Here is a picture of Barbara at the end of March (repeated from the March blog) with the Millers from Indiana, and then one with Karen Wright and Kathy in hospice.  Also of Kathy and Janet in hospice just before Janet returned to Indiana and Barbara was moved to the nursing home.  The wisteria picture is inserted because 4 pictures fit better than 3, and because we’re enjoying so much new spring life while trying to help in the final winter days of Barbara’s life.

Barbara came to PG at the end of January, 2012, from the nursing home in Indiana that they are hoping she can return to now.  Some have questioned the wisdom of her coming here for just over a year, but we’re certainly glad she came.  She had many good days here, lots of meetings, visitors, and fellowship.  We’ve been glad to get to meet the folks who visited her… and appreciated what she meant to so many.  We wish we’d known her earlier in life… but are glad for the wisdom and influence she shared with us in her time here.

Frances McPherson spend a few days in the hospital, at the same time as Barbara, with bronchitis.  Frances has recovered nicely and is back with us at PG.  The rest of the residents are doing well.

Mary Jane Pike is an interesting resident.  73 years old, in wonderful physical shape, she suffers from loss of short term memory.  She’s a “free spirit”, wandering around doing what she likes.  She likes the outdoors… spends a lot of time weeding.  With the size of this farm, and the rate weeds grow in this humid climate, she has a full time job!  She’s fond of some weeds, and tries to decorate her room with them, much to the chagrin of those who try to clean her room.  The pictures below show her pulling weeds, clowning for the camera, and playing with one of the twins (not sure, I think it’s Maven), the weeds in her room, and the twins again (because 6 pictures are better than 5 :).

The wild flowers in April have been unbelievable.  The top soil here at PG is basically nonexistent.  We have sand at the top of the hill, and clay at the bottom.  Getting anything (useful) to grow is difficult, yet the wild flowers are beautiful.

At the beginning of April Samuel was pruning the pecan trees (see the cut limbs around the trees).  He’s shown below with sisters Andrea Lund (Minnesota) and Jenny Waldo (who lives here), and Jenny’s girls, beside the shredder he uses to shred the limbs to mulch.

All of the paper shell pecan trees are grafted.  The root stock may be from a walnut or native pecan tree.  About 18 inches above the ground, that tree is cut off and a paper shell pecan (we have 5 varieties) is grafted on.  The old root stock, below the graft, continues to put out “sucker limbs” (shown below).  These limbs draw the energy from the tree, and would produce the fruit of the old root stock.  Samuel has to cut these limbs off every year.  There’s a good spiritual lesson in that for me!  The pecan pollen is produced from a male flower (shown below) and transferred between trees by the wind.

The orchard at the end of April looks much different than it did at the beginning of April, with the wild flowers and leaves on the trees.  We’ve lost many trees to the drought of the last few years.  Unfortunately we’re loosing this huge oak along the drive into the farm.

Doug Murphy from New Mexico visited for a weekend.  He’s shown below with a half size Elk sculpture he made several years ago, which we keep at Pecan Grove.  Virginia’s sisters visited her for a few days, staying at the cabin and enjoying PG.
