August 2025

Filed under: Pecan Grove — knewman @ 8:14 pm

We had two major birthdays this month. Emma turned 83 and had many well wishers calling or texting her with accolades. Her brother knew that she wanted to do something special for everyone on her birthday so he gave her some pizza money. We had a pizza party with everyone from the farm as well as the Opels! Here she is with her cake, the pizza, and everyone at the table.

Fern Duncan turned 95 this month. The staff at Park Manor Nursing Home have been getting her into a special chair they can wheel her around in, so they had her prepared and ready for us when we arrived to celebrate with her. We were even able to pick up Joyce Naber on the way and have her share in the festivities. Here is Fern with her cupcake, the party goers, again being read to by Salena. Sherdenia sent a picture of herself holding a birthday message for Fern (2nd picture). We called Sherdenia and she talked some to Fern. Also, after the party we all went to Luby’s Cafeteria for lunch which is a fun treat for the residents and especially Joyce. The last few photos are of us at the tables in Luby’s and everyone posing in the lunch room with the Park Manor residents.

Ronald has been moved to Park Manor. We had to wait for a few things to clear up before he could be moved but now he is settled in over there. He took the move very graciously and has been very accepting of the staff there. Here he is being sent off and visiting Alice.

Stetson Nordic has been helping us with some tree work that needed to be done. Several of our larger trees on the property have been in the slow process of dying, and with our frequent thunderstorms they like to drop limbs everywhere. Here he is cutting up one of the largest trees we felled, and again looking triumphant.

August brought many visitors, Don and Becky came to visit Elsie with their daughter, Lana, and her two children, Lucy and Ellie. Here they are in front of the fireplace, and again with Ronald on the bridge.

We always appreciate some repeats! Ken and Mary MacAdams came with Don and Becky Schroeder to visit Elsie again. They were recently on a safari in Botswana where they were able to capture beautiful photos of the wildlife. Ken put together a nice presentation for us, and walked us through some of the different species, their habitat, and interesting facts about each one. Here he is giving the presentation to everyone, and again with Elsie, Mary, Don, and Becky.

Rick and Pat Bishop came to visit Esther. Here they are in front of the piano.

Emma and Ronald shared a visit from Leonel, Rosa and Frida Gomez. Here they are in front of the piano.

Val Killam has been working with us for the month of August. Her daughter-in-law, Kristie Killam, brought her grand children, Devyn and Spencer, to see her for a day. Here they are in front of the fire place happy as can be.

Val and Marie were invited to take a weekend getaway by the Hottells. They had intended to visit some of Val’s family but they were sick, so instead decided to have a fun weekend in College Station at the Hottells. Here they are about to embark on their weekend with Tony and Donna Hottell.

For a short while this month we had 10 residents! That, coupled with our new staff members, we decided it was time for another Pecan Grove photo. Here are most of the staff with the residents and all 10 residents by themselves.

As we mentioned, Val Killam came for the entire month to help us out. She stayed in Gwen’s room, having known her from a visit to Korea many years ago. She enjoyed the work and the atmosphere, but mostly the company and catching up. Here she is posing with Becky and then with Jerry and Becky, and again with everyone wishing her farewell.

Steve Peirson came this weekend and visited the folks in the nursing home, and then us here at PG. Fern recognized him and spoke a little. He called Sherdenia for her and she lit up when she heard her voice. Here is Steve with Clarence and Carl. They had a gospel meeting this afternoon, but 4 inches of rain in a few hours caused localized flooding, so the meeting was smaller than usual.

August has been hot and very wet, but beautiful. Here is a picture of one of the sunrises we have been enjoying, the wildlife enjoying our ample grass, and some of the flooding mentioned above.

Resident Journals

Ronald Elliott

As we mentioned, Ronald has moved on to live at Park Manor Nursing Home. The ladies had been paying especially close attention to him out of concern that he might fall. They were all relieved to hear that he was accepted at Park Manor and would be getting more care. He took the move very well, knowing that he needed the extra eyes on him. Here he is walking with Doreen one last time to feed the fish, and again in his new room at Park Manor.

Esther Duncan

Esther was invited to go to Kentucky for conventions again this month. Here she is so happy to be a part of the convention photos, and happier still for dessert. Sue Culver (sister to John and Lois) had made this coconut cake for Esther before, and knew it was one of her favorites. She kindly made it again to welcome her to Kentucky.

Elsie Schroeder

Elsie always does great when she gets visitors, especially grandkids. It is so nice to see everyone pitching in on her favorite past time: making puzzles. She even tries to forgo her naps, just to get every precious moment of time together with her family. Here they are crowding around the puzzle working away.

Clarence Mounce

Clarence does well. He usually skips breakfast and has put himself on a relatively strict diet of less (not none) sugar. Being across from Marie’s room gives him ample opportunity to drop in and chat with her. Here he is with Marie, Gwen, Ruth and Val at Fern’s birthday party.

Marie Mounce

Marie keeps about the same, still interested in helping out in the kitchen or making a Cajun dish when the mood strikes her. She enjoyed her time at the Hottell’s with Val. Here she is saying farewell to Val with some of the other residents.

Emma Perez

Emma has many people calling, texting, or sending her letters. She makes it a point to see Alice and the others as often as possible. Here she is sitting with Alice during Fern’s birthday party, and again with Lounell and Ruth about to visit Alice and Joyce.

Doreen Beyer

Doreen is a big help in the kitchen, and a good help to Ronald. She made time to walk with him daily, speak with him often, and check on him regularly. Here she is with Joyce at Fern’s birthday party. She really loves to get Joyce laughing, and we all appreciate seeing her big smile.

Gwen Farmer

Gwen keeps about the same. She recently received a nice package from Korea containing the workers list and convention photo of the entire staff. She was thrilled to share them with us and point out a few of her companions. Here she is leaving the puzzle table, Kenny tried to snap a candid photo but she turned too fast.

Ruth Henderson

Ruth is still doing great, nothing slows her down! She gets up and walks just before dawn every morning. Like Emma, she enjoys taking every opportunity to go and visit those at Park Manor. She was companions with Alice. Here she is with Emma and Elsie.

Naomi Watson

Naomi has been fitting in splendidly here. She is so looking forward to the day all of her things can be moved into her room, but above all, she is looking forward to the delivery of her prized piano. She talks often of wanting to play it, and all the memories she has associated with it. We look forward to hearing her play! She has also graciously offered her tutoring services, she is willing to teach anyone to play piano if they are inclined. Here she is chatting with Salena.

Fern Duncan, Alice Oetken, Gilbert Reese, and Joyce Naber

As you saw, we all celebrated Fern’s 95th birthday this month. We got all of the residents there for the festivities and the Park Manor residents were ready to greet us when we arrived. Gilbert is doing about his usual, he recognizes us and smiles when we talk with him. Alice really loves to see her old companions and is eager to talk with each one that comes near to say hello. Fern is mostly non-responsive, but does smile and seems alert when we speak or read to her. Here she is with Ken and Kathy, and the others during the birthday party with Ruth.

As always, we cannot thank you enough for your continued love and care for each one here.

July 2025

Texas Floods

Several have contacted us, wondering if PG was affected by the flooding that occurred in Texas in July. The flooding happened in central Texas about 250 miles west of here. We did receive a lot of rain, but nothing compared to the flooded area. Fortunately, PG is located at one of the highest points in this area, so flooding here seems very unlikely. Both our lake and pond have overflowed their dams during hurricanes, without damage. No such overflow happened in July.

Changes at Pecan Grove

  • Clarence Mounce had been a resident at PG in late 2022 and early 2023 due to a brain tumor which caused significant headaches. The tumor was treated with radiation, and the headaches improved, allowing Clarence to return to the work. After Happy convention this month, Clarence returned to PG as a resident. We are very pleased to have him back! Here he is with Chris Newman who brought him back from Happy.
Chris Newman and Clarence Mounce
  • Two of our staff, Shawn and Anita Bass, decided to move to Michigan to be near and work with her siblings there. They finished working here and moved initially in with her daughter while waiting for their place in Michigan to be ready.
  • Salena and Abigail contracted Covid! Fortunately, no one else got sick. Salena went to visit her family while recovering. Abigail is recovered and returned to work today. Val Killam is coming to help in August. Hopefully by the end of August everything will get back to normal.
  • We hired Jerry and Becky (Farring) Grosskreutz from Kentucky to replace Shawn and Anita. They have been here some in July. Becky went to Fargo to help her mother, Ruth, while her sister, Priscilla, has a knee replaced. Jerry is working here until mid-August when they will go back to Kentucky to move their things here. Here they are and then Jerry with the residents he took shopping.

Birthday

Marie had a big birthday this month, she turned 93! She had many well wishers in attendance including Kent and Linda Opel. Here are all the smiling faces at the table and Marie with her cake.

Visitors

Emma and Ronald had some visitors from South Houston. They brought the grandmother of the two children who had come all the way from Venezuela to see Emma. They knew many companions of Ronald and took pictures with him to show to his old companions. Ronald really perked up talking about the men he cares so deeply for. The couples names are Jarlet and Yaneth Sanchez with their son, Santiago, and daughter, Sofia. Yaneth’s, mother, Magdalena Venediz, was the one who came from Venezuela. Here they are with Emma and Ronald in the entry way.

Pedro and Sary Rodriguez and son, Peter, Rodriguez came with Ana Laura Olivares to visit.

Brent Newman (Ken’s brother) visited several days. Here he is with Ronald.

Brent and Ronald

Candice Sandon with children AJ, Miles and Bryanna visited grandma, Elsie.

Theron and Angela Schroeder and their children Everett, Lewis, Camille, Phoebe came to visit grandma, Elsie.

Andre and Julia Bilbao and their children, Ainhoa, Joanna and Angelo, from Singapore, came to visit. Andre is originally from France. Ken, Kathy and family knew his family when they lived there. Later Andre lived with the Newmans here in Willis for a year in 1995-96.

Dominique and Mimi Mille’s family was together, including their son, Pierre, with children Emma and Bryce, and their daughter, Elisa and husband Ian Herd, and 4 children Isaac, James, Eli and Anaies. They know Andre from time he spent with them in Vietnam.

Dickie and Patty (Maki) Beeman came for a visit.

Lounell Claybourn came to visit and took Emma and Ruth to the nursing homes to see Alice, Gilbert, Fern and Joyce.

Emma, Lounell and Ruth

Lorianne (Dalrymple) Burrows and her sons, Lochlan and Devon, visited from New Zealand. We didn’t get a picture of Lorianne, but here are her sons with the Furrow kids…. Burrows and Furrows 🙄.

Resident Journals

Ronald Elliott

Ronald seems to get his days and nights mixed up more frequently now. We’re afraid he will soon need to go to a nursing home.

Emma Perez

It seems to never fail that Emma will have at least one visit per month. She has so many close friends who want to call, text, email, or visit her. She returned from her two week trip to the valley with many stories of her time there, and her appreciation for the families.

Esther Duncan

Esther was so excited when she found out her good friend Joyce Watkins would be at Happy convention this year. She asked some neighboring friends if it were possible to ride along in their car, which of course they said yes. She came back saying “Happy was a convention of restoration” and how pleased she was to see some profess and others get baptized.

Marie Mounce

Marie also wanted to attend Happy this year. She knew Clarence would be there and was coming back to be with us, so she wanted to hear him speak. We’re glad she was able to attend.

Clarence Mounce

We saved Clarence’s his old room for him, right across from Marie’s. He does well with getting around, driving, and visiting.

Elsie Schroeder

Elsie still does well, and as always can be found at the puzzle table. Her granddaughter, Candace Stanton came with her three children AJ, Miles, and Brenna. The boys love to fish and Brenna enjoys being with her grandmother at the puzzle table.

Ruth Henderson

Ruth went to the Mountainair convention. It was good she could get back to NM where she labored recently. She stays about the same, quietly helping and keeping her sense of humor.

Doreen Beyer

Doreen stays much the same. She does a lot of to help and encourage others.

Gwen Farmer

Gwen also stays the same. She speaks often of Korea, and would find it easier if we spoke Korean in our morning bible studies!

Nursing Home Residents

Gilbert, Alice and Fern are in Park Manor Nursing Home in Conroe. Gilbert and Alice are much the same. Fern has improved somewhat, so they are getting her up into a wheel chair for some meals. Here is Alice with Fern and Gilbert with Ruth.

Joyce Naber is in the Willis Nursing Home. She is very happy there, and always happy to see visitors. Here she is today with Kathy at a hymn sing they were having.

July 4th

We celebrated the 4th of July with everyone on the farm and their families. Of course there were snacks and fireworks involved. Here is everyone sitting to watch and a shot of the fireworks.

Thanks for your interest in us here!

June 2025

Filed under: Senior Residence — knewman @ 1:44 pm

June has been hot and wet, which is a potent combination. Our nature is still verdant and growing like crazy. Here are some more pictures of the wild life here.

June is another month that brings many birthdays. We had a special celebration for Joyce when she turned 82. A young man, Wyatt Vybiral, offered to come sing for the residents. He is very talented and sang hymns by request, everyone joined in. Here are some photos of the hymn sing, the cake, and the birthday afterward. Joyce said she was genuinely surprised at the turn out as she had expected to be celebrating her birthday alone where she stays in the Willis Nursing Home. We are happy she was so touched.

It just so happens that Gwen has a birthday the very next day after Joyce! She opted for a quieter more subtle affair. She shared some of her birthday cards from her friends in South Korea. Here she is at the table enjoying her cake with her birthday well wishers.

Clarence and Carl have been around recently. Marie and Clarence had some of their old friends from Louisiana come visit. Ulysses LaPrairie, who owns the Effie convention grounds, came for a visit with his family. His son, Paul, and daughter, Dana, and her husband, Charles Khan, were with him. Here they are in the entry way with Ronald and Melissa Bassett.

On that same day, by coincidence, Marie and Clarence were also visited by their niece, the Bassett family. Shay and Melissa with their daughter, Lacee, came to visit. Here they are in front of the piano.

Andrea Harris came with her friend Minerva Martinez. Andrea knows our residents well from being at Georgetown every year. She stayed to play some piano for us. Here they are with a few of the ladies in front of the fire place.

Robert Klingler and his son, Ben, came to visit Ronald. Here they are at the table.

Linda Opel visited with her cousin Judy Kevlen from Florida.

Linda, Judy and Esther

The kitchen staff had help today from 4 grandchildren. Here are Maven and Maren Furrow and Katelyn Kelleher helping Marian Opel, and Dylan Kelleher wearing his Irish shirt with a real Irish woman, Esther.

Resident Journals

Ronald Elliott

Ronald is struggling with his memory. We had the VA do a mental evaluation and the doctor said he has Alzheimer’s. He does well physically, aside from his incontinence. He still likes to walk down and feed the fish as often as he can. Now that it is getting quite hot he decides to sit in the shade instead. Here he is receiving a new wheelchair, reading the news paper, and speaking with our new neighbor Kent Opel. Kent and Linda now live about 7 miles from PG.

Esther Duncan

Esther continues to do well. She will be going to Happy this year and looks forward to many convention opportunities. She really loves to visit with Joyce and was so pleased to be able to celebrate her birthday with her. Here the two pals are together around the piano.

Doreen Beyer

Doreen is fitting in well here. She loves to help out in the kitchen and play the piano. She has taken an interest in Ronald and goes with him on nature walks. She spends most of the day in her room reading her bibles, both in French and English. She really knows her stuff! Here she is playing the piano.

Emma Perez

Emma is still our most visited resident. She has so many adoring friends who want to visit her often. She had an invitation to go down to the valley and visit friends and relatives. She is there now, spending 2 weeks. Here she is with Alice, leaving on her valley trip, and with some of her visitors Dora Tamez and Reina Zabala, and then Bruna Moreno and Clara Perez. Bruna was on her way back home to Monterey, so her daughter Clara brought her to be with Emma once more.

Marie Mounce

Marie had a lot of fun with her visitors and having Clarence around for a few days. She still likes to cook in the kitchen. She made some sweet and sour shrimp and two apple pies the other day. Here she is talking to Kathy and outside with our cat Minerva.

Gwen Farmer

Gwen does well. Her birthday brought her many well wishes from Korea which she was happy to share with us. Only she could read the cards though! Here she is at the puzzle with Elsie.

Ruth Henderson

Ruth does really well. She even surprised the physical therapist with how fast and forceful she could walk. Every morning she takes a long walk up to the gate. Here she is with Emma and Alice. She left today for Mountainair convention in New Mexico.

Elsie Schroeder

Elsie has received a brand new batch of puzzles recently. She completes them so fast that she was having to repeat them! Now she has plenty to choose from!

Joyce Naber

Joyce was thrilled to have her birthday with us, and the residents were just as thrilled she could be here. She was so thankful to everyone for attending, When she was returned to her nursing home they were having music therapy which she happily joined in. Here she is with her cake, with her party guests, and enjoying music therapy.

Alice Oetken, Gilbert Reese, Fern Duncan

All of our Park Manor residents are doing about the same. Gilbert can be found in his spot by the window in the dining room, usually being talked to by Alice. Alice enjoyed several visits from our residents here. Fern was out in the main living area in a rolling bed. Here they all are with their visitors. Lastly, a picture of Emma, Marie, Doreen and Ken with Gilbert.

We appreciate your continued care and thoughtfulness for the ones here.

May 2025

Filed under: Senior Residence — knewman @ 5:07 pm

May is always a beautiful month, with a large change in appearance from April and March. Because of all the rain we have been getting, there are several new types of mushrooms and flowers that sprout up. Here are some of the more interesting examples.

As usual we had so many wonderful visitors this month, starting with Norman and Roland Leitheed who came to see Ruth. Here they are in the entry way.

Lynden and Nadine Laird came for another visit. They always take time to stop in and see Fern and the others. They were here for Kathy’s birthday and as always were very affable. Nadine had just had her 70th birthday so a piece of Kathy’s cake was given to her with a candle. Here they are at the table, again with Emma in the entry and with Joyce.

We always love having Don and Becky come visit, Elsie especially. We are going to be seeing them more often because they will be joining us once a month on Sunday for meeting. They brought our good friend Sylvia McPherson. Here they are around the puzzle, a favorite past time.

After union meeting on Sunday, Shawn and Anita invited several to come for lunch at the center. Here they are at the table. Kent and Linda Opel (on the left side) purchased a home 7 miles from Pecan Grove, and have been moving up here from Pearland all month. We’re glad to have them in our meetings and hope they visit PG frequently.

Ken’s sister, Ronda and her husband Mike, came for a few days with their cousin, Audrey Fuller. The whole family got together with them and they joined us for a celebration of the Furrow kids graduation. Here they are in the entry way with a few of the ladies, and again outside the cabin.

Gary and Wanda Saathoff came to visit everyone. They brought Wanda’s brother and his wife, Clint and Glenda Whitaker. Here they are with Elsie, Emma, Ruth and Ronald in front of the fire place.

William Sutton has known Ronald for many years so he came for lunch and a long visit. He also took a quick tour around the property. Here he is with Ronald in his room.

Ruth had our final visitors of the month. Her nephew, Owen Henderson and his wife Susan, came for the weekend. They took Ruth out for a visit to town and will be with us in union meeting tomorrow. Here they are with Ken and Kathy just before leaving for town.

We had several birthdays in May. Kathy turned 74 and looked cheery doing it. Here she is with her cake and balloon. Flowers all around!

Also, Dominique turned 68 this month. Here he is at the table trying extra hard to blow out his candles!

We have several new faces around here. David and Marion Opel have been learning the ropes and picking up more hours. The residents like to interact with the new recruits and direct as best they can. Here they are with their cousin, Abigail, in the kitchen.

Minerva is still our shining little mascot. She hangs around on the porch most of the day basking in the sunlight and waiting for attention. Here she is with Salena and looking radiant as usual.

Resident Journals

Esther Duncan

Esther does well as usual. She still keeps a healthy correspondence, especially since her birthday in March. She is in the Sunday morning meeting rotation, so she gets to enjoy eating out every once in a while. Here she is with Marie, both thrilled with a new Thai soup they had never tried. Marie wanted to make it so bad that its now on the menu! Their curry dish had cubes of a vegetable in it that Esther didn’t recognize, so she asked Ken to taste it. Imagine an Irish person who doesn’t recognize potato!

Marie Mounce

Marie had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Martinique this month. She went with Doreen who needed to pick up some of her belongings. They spent a week with some old friends who have the meeting in their home. They visited with everyone they could and had a memorable time. Unfortunately, on their return trip their last flight from Miami to Houston was delayed and eventually canceled. Eventually they made it home safe and were able to rest. Marie ended up with a slight cold but was fine otherwise. She has recovered well and is so happy to be home. Here she is happily tending her garden.

Ruth Henderson

Ruth fits in here great, she has a wonderful spirit. The staff and residents appreciate her calm and kind demeanor. She decided to invite all of the ladies to her room for tea one afternoon. She provided plates of snacks and they chatted and laughed for a few hours. Here they are enjoying one another’s company.

Ronald Elliott

Ronald has been suffering from his back pain more often. He still gets up and walks with Minerva and Doreen to feed the fish. He was remembering an old hymn from our previous hymn books. He could remember the words well enough that Doreen found it and played it for him on the piano. Here he is while walking and again listening to his own personal concert .

Doreen Beyer

Doreen also had a grand time traveling with Marie to Martinique. She kept complimenting the wheel chair service men who wheeled them both through the airport. She kept saying how kind and sweet they were and how “getting old has some perks!” Here she and Marie are with the friends in Martinique. Sonia was a co-worker with Doreen and Marie in years past.

Emma Perez

Emma is doing great, especially with the volume of visitors she is receiving. She is so happy to show anyone and everyone around and of course make introductions. She also loves to work, cook, or help out in any way she can. Rebeca Pvente came from Monterey to visit with her daughter and her husband Gema and Raul Moreno. Here she is visiting Joyce and again with her visitors.

Gwen Farmer

Gwen does well, she still helps with the puzzle as much as possible. The ladies are so quick to finish puzzles that we have to change them out pretty frequently.

Elsie Schroeder

Elsie is always so happy to have Don and Becky come for a visit. Now that they will be meeting with us once a month she is even more excited. Here they are with Sylvia McPherson posing by the puzzle table and another of Elsie with our neighbor, Dawn Overby, who likes to help with the puzzles.

Joyce Naber

Joyce is doing well after her fall. She did fracture one of her fingers which they placed in a stent to heal. She was discharged from the hospital on Cinco de Mayo and Salena brought her back to her home in the Willis Nursing Home. She loves her visitors and loves to laugh so a visit with her is always a fun time. Here she is with some of her visitors.

Fern Duncan, Alice Oetken, Gilbert Reese

All of our away from home residents continue to do well. Fern sleeps for most of the day, and when visited doesn’t respond much. Nadine and Lynden were in to see her and took a few good photos. Alice and Gilbert still enjoy lunch together everyday in Gilbert’s place by the window. Here is Fern with Magnolia flower from Esther and being visited by the Lairds.

Thank you for your love and appreciation of each one here.

April 2025

Filed under: Pecan Farming — knewman @ 3:07 pm

April has been gorgeous, certainly spring has sprung. We are enjoying wild flower season, and decided to take advantage of the Bluebonnets. We took a little trip with the residents, just to scenic sight-see. Here they all are in the Bluebonnets, and at Freddy’s for burgers and shakes afterwards. Arguably, their favorite part!

Here are the staff from the same day.

The staff decided it would be nice to have a picnic to continue enjoying this weather. Here everyone is enjoying the breeze on the porch.

Just like with March we have a lot of birthdays in April. Kenny turned 33 and got to have pie instead of cake. Marie even made some fabulous shrimp etouffee! Here he is with his pie and card, and the table set with Marie’s etouffee.

Ken and Shawn’s birthdays are 2 days apart so we had a birthday lunch for them.

Kathy, Ken, Shawn, Anita

Alice and Ken share a birthday, so we all went to celebrate at Park Manor nursing home. We brought cupcakes and even shared a few with their staff and residents. Everyone was so happy to see Alice and Gilbert again! Fern was too tired, but the ladies talked to her all the same. Here we all are in the lunchroom, and a few of everyone enjoying their cupcakes.

Doreen had the first visitors of the month, Chuck and Elain Griffeth from Michigan. Also, her cousin Janalee Kracht and husband Harold came for a short visit. Here she is with both sets of visitors, and again everyone around the lunch table.

Franz and Sally Holzmann visited Elsie. They were her neighbors when she lived in New Braunfels. Don and Becky Schroeder visited and took Elsie home for a week, then brought her back the following weekend. David Cleveland was here for a few days, gathering his things. Elsie loves scrabble, so Wayne and Dawn watched a scrabble game.

Jack Nelson and his wife, Linda, brought Joyce Major to visit. Jack helped us build Pecan Grove so he has many good memories to share. Here they are in front of the fire place.

We had a good visit from Brooke Henderson who came to see her great aunt Ruth. They had many discussions back in her room and Brooke was so happy to see her fitting in. They are both related to Talus Murphy who is in our field this year. Here they are in front of the dinning room.

Our young sister worker, Aislynn Stanton, came with her grandmother, Susan, for a visit. Here they are chatting with some of the sisters in the living room.

All of our new ladies really like to work hard. They don’t call them “sister workers” for nothing! Kenny says there are so many helping hands in the kitchen it feels like swimming with a school of fish. Here is a quick picture to show what we mean.

Ken and Kathy were on a Far East trip. In Singapore they were asked to make a presentation about Pecan Grove at a pot luck! Ken quickly put a presentation together, and the friends certainly enjoyed it. Here are the friends and workers that were there.

Friends and Workers in Singapore

We still have Minerva with us, she has taken to walking with Ronald down to see the fish. She must recognize people using walkers and it reminds her of Alice. She stays right there with him, often crossing under his feet or following close behind him. Here she is with her new walking buddy.

Resident Journals

Ronald Elliott

Ronald has been getting better with improved sleep. He loves to walk down and feed the fish. The staff now tries to accompany him. He really lights up when he sees the fish and even seems to get some of his memories back. So the staff has been encouraging him to go out into the beautiful sunshine more. Here he is on one of his nature walks down memory lane, and again with Doris Kopitke (Salena’s aunt).

Doreen Beyer

Doreen is still doing great, although she did have some strange headaches recently. Her blood pressure was higher than normal for a few days which kept her from working too hard in the kitchen. Everything passed pretty quickly and she was back to her usual self again. She still keeps a regular correspondence with many friends in the islands and can be found texting or calling them on a daily basis. Here she is with some of the ladies and some of our Texas sister workers Mona Reese, Sue George and Sue Dawson.

Elsie Schroeder

Elsie stays the same, ever willing to put piece after piece into a puzzle. Even when her eyes might fail her she still painstakingly feels the edges of each piece and finally puts them all together. This month brought several surprises for her, for example she spent an entire week with her son Don and Becky Schroeder and her neighbors from New Braunfels Sally and Franz.

Esther Duncan

Esther is still doing great. She really likes astronomy and catching the phases of the moon. Every night she goes out to check on her lunar friend. She said “even if I can’t see him, I know the moon is there”. Just where God put him.

Emma Perez

Emma has had a few outings already with some of our dear friends. Of course she also loves to go visit Alice, Gilbert, and Fern. Here she is smiling in front of the fire place and again with Alice.

Marie Mounce

Marie does well, still finding her way around the kitchen. It sure is nice having a Cajun in the house! She bakes and makes classic Cajun cooking, with a lot less spice of course. We get these local magazines called “Postcards” which have some fun recipes. Marie is always game to try them. Here she is happily baking applesauce pancakes, and again with Anita.

Gwen Farmer

Gwen is doing great! She still is part of the puzzle crew and gives a lot of effort to putting them together. We recently received some new puzzles which are more tricky, this does not deter them.

Ruth Henderson

Is doing well, and has adjusted to living here quickly. She is another one that likes to be in the kitchen, drying dishes or rinsing them. Whatever is needed!

Joyce Naber (Willis Nursing Home)

While finalizing this blog update, we just heard from the nursing home that Joyce fell and hit her head. She seems fine but they are sending her to the hospital to get checked out.

Otherwise, Joyce really does well, considering she had some dental trouble this month. She had to get some temporary crowns, and then return a week later for the permanent ones. She takes it all in stride. Here she is completely unphased enjoying a Freddy’s milkshake, and again smiling with Anita and Salena.

Fern Duncan, Gilbert Reese, Alice Oetken (Park Manor Nursing Home)

Fern, Gilbert and Alice stay pretty much the same. Alice still likes to eat meals with Gilbert, she calls him grandpa and worries about him. Alice loves having visitors and is quick to invite us back anytime. Here she is with Emma and Esther, then Fern with Esther, then Alice, Gilbert, Ruth, Joyce and Ken. Emma suggested getting a toy cat for Alice, which we did. She was delighted.

Thanks for your interest in us here!
