August – Hot!

Time flies!  I’ve gotten way behind in keeping this blog up to date!  We still have 4 residents, Bea Jecmenek, Crystal Lewsader, Doris Crawford and Theresa Goff. Theresa just arrived to stay permanently today.  She had been here for a month in the Spring.  Next Friday Frances McPherson arrives from Ohio.  So our numbers are increasing gradually.  We continue to have lots of folks visiting.  My brother Brent Newman married Ann Parsons at PG, so there were a lot visiting at that time.

It has been really hot and dry this summer, so we’re having a terrible time getting much grass to grow.  The lake is down about a foot, which isn’t bad considering we’re pumping water out of it for irrigating.

It’s hard to believe that more than a month has passed since the last posting, and that this is memorial day weekend already!  It seems 2009 just started!  Things are going very well at Pecan Grove.  The grass was just planted, all the paths are in, and the fountain is working in the lake.  The pecan trees are flourishing, though this year probably won’t be as good as last year would have been without hurricane Ike, because pecan trees are “alternate bearing” which means they bear more pecans one year and then take a year off.  We continue to have lots of visitors and are enjoying gospel meetings at the residence on Sunday afternoons.  The workers (Joyce and Andrea) have cooked a few meals and done some cleaning, great to have them around.

Fishing

We’re still having lots of visitors.  Everyone was sorry to see Ed and Leah leave! Glenn and Shirley Spunagle from Redbud Canyon… lots of others.  The asphalt and flag pole are finally done.  The major things left to do include finishing the trail around the lake, grass and the fountain in the lake.  The fishing is good, both the catching and the eating!

Crystal turned 90, and received more cards than that!

Move In!

Finally, we moved into the Senior Residence Saturday February 28th!  Bea Jecmenek is our first full time resident.  Ed and Leah Bolt are also here for the month of March.  30 to 40 of the friends came and helped with the move in.  Here are the pictures from the move in Saturday and a pot luck Sunday evening.  Place your mouse over a picture to see the title.  Click on it to enlarge it.

There’s still plenty of work going on outside with landscaping, building bridges and decks, installing a fountain, etc.  We need rain now to fill the lake since it has been reworked!

We’ve had visitors every day so far, and hope that continues!  Please come and see us!

Sheetrock

Progress on the residence continues.  The contractor still claims it will be complete January 31, and that seems realistic.  The first resident says she’ll be moving in February 7th.  Here are some photos taken yesterday, showing the nearly completed outside and the sheetrock in the building.

Work on dredging the lake has progressed.  Fortunately the weather has been fairly dry, allowing this work to be done.  The first 3 photos below were taken from the same place standing on the dam looking over the drained lake, left to right, showing Dad and Mom’s new place, the residence and then the pecan orchard.  The last shows the back side of the dam which was covered with trees.  It will filled in so it has a 4 to 1 slope, allowing it to be mowed.

Jack Nelson began working at the pecan grove a few months ago.  The following shows Jack with his wife May.  Vincent Occhipinti happened to be visiting at the same time.

Just to keep up the red neck tradition… here’s Ronda’s dog Alex showing how he rides in her car, in front of Jack Nelson’s 5th wheel trailer.
