December was a good month for the residents at Pecan Grove. We finished our building modification so now we have room for 12 residents, though we still only have 10. There were many visitors, especially with the holidays. Here are pictures of some of them, and of Frank with the beautiful flowers he received.

Unfortunately we’ve had a sad situation develop with some of the employees. Marianna Hughes became very sick and unable to continue working. Lounell Clayborn resigned to be with Marianna. This decision was just finalized yesterday, so we’re searching for some replacements. Fortunately there are several in the area who are willing and able to step in and help. We feel for Marianna and Lounell, and hope Marianna’s health improves soon.

Mom (Leona Newman) turned 80 yesterday. Her brother and his wife, Lynn and Florence Fuller, flew in from Pennsylvania. David and Mary Bolt, from the Newry PA convention grounds, were here with their daughters Heather and Anna to visit their son Travis Bolt and his wife Jamie. Trevor Chenault was also here with them. So last night the Bolts and Newmans were together at Brent and Ann’s for mom’s birthday. The Bolt and Newman families met the gospel together in the 1930’s…. and have been good friends for 4 generations. The pictures below show mom’s lunch at PG and then the Newman (including Lynn and Florence Fuller) and Bolt groups with mom last night.

In all, 2011 was a wonderful year. We look forward to another good year in 2012.

All the residents at Pecan Grove are doing well. Frank’s memory is getting worse, but he hasn’t lost his sense of humor. They’ve had numerous outings in the bus to gospel meetings, union meetings, and Wal-Mart. Taking them to Wal-Mart is humorous, like herding cats! The bus is used on Sunday mornings now to take them about 400 yards to Terry and Kim Hoffman’s.

Our family had some wonderful news in November. Our daughter Karla and Brenda Furrow are expecting identical twins in May! We’re glad our workers are back after conventions. This year they are Sharon Wahlin and Jennifer Downs. They’re having meetings on Tuesday nights in Conroe.

We’ve had many priviledges at Pecan Grove in November, with many visitors. The following are Betty’s family including her daughter Joyce and her companion Ruthie. The second photo shows the Johnsons and the Eggers from New York who visited Naomi.

The Bells from Australia shown here with my brother Brent and his wife Ann. Some of our snowbirds, the Hincklys from Minnesota have returned.

All of the residents (as well as about 20 other friends) went to a school choir concert which one of our young friends, MacKensey Hammer, participated. She’s just to the left of the podium in this photo. The water is still down about 8 ft in Lake Conroe. We can take the boat to restaurants, but climbing from the boat to the pier is difficult, even for Kenny who is 6’5″! We had about 2 inches of rain in November, for which we’re grateful.

Chuck and Carylon Porter (no relation to Frank) brought Evelyn Wilson from North Carolina to be at Pecan Grove. We’re sure glad to have her here!

Now there are 10 residents at PG. The facility was built with 10 apartments, so we would be full. However, we’re modifying two of the larger apartments to be 2 bedroom. When that work is complete our capacity will be 12. Our Assisted Living License with the State of Texas allows us to have up to 14. The 10 residents are shown below. Standing are Teresa Goff, Jean Hagemeiere, Frank Porter, Betty Lawrence, Bea Jecmenek. Seated are Esther Potts, Naomi Nicolson, Evelyn Wilson, Doris Crawford and Frances McPherson.

All 10 residents and 4 employees were able to attend Georgetown convention, so for the first time in 2.5 years, the residence was closed.

As I mentioned last month, the meeting at PG is being divided into 2 meetings. The picture below is of one of the last large meetings we’ll have. The second picture is of Dora Gilmore who visited between the two Georgetown conventions.

Some other visitors…

A few months ago I showed pictures of the damage wild hogs have done on the farm. Mike was able to kill one out of a pack of them. We haven’t seen them since. We found a new way to deliver groceries!

The weather’s beautiful, birds are beautiful, but we sure need rain! We had over 2 inches in October but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what we need.

With our growing number of residents (9 now, 10 next week when Evelyn Wilson comes), we decided to get a 14 passenger van to haul everyone. It’s been used for one trip to Wal-Mart and to bring everyone to union meeting here at our home this morning. It will really be useful for hauling everyone to Georgetown, in a few weeks.

Esther and Naomi had birthdays recently.

Kathy and I went fishing in Alaska and brought back enough salmon and halibut for a dinner at PG, along with several visitors.

Recent visitors include Carey Tsunamori (shown with Dale and Patty Maki), Don, Jenny and Ava Waldo (from Yamhill Oregon).

Frank is the official humming bird feeder reacher (closely supervised by Jean). There are lots of humming birds now. They spend more time fighting than eating, so they’re fun to watch. Doirs likes to give kids a ride on her walker. Here she’s giving Ava a ride.

The farm house, that will replace the old farm house, has just been completed, and Hoffman’s have moved in. November 13th the first Sunday morning meeting will be held in this home. The meeting that is currently at the Pecan Grove senior residence will be split into 2 meetings. One of those meetings will be at Dale and Patty Maki’s (17 miles from PG). The other will be in this Hoffman home. This will give the residents an outing every week. It’s about 300 yards from the senior residence building to this new house. The second picture below shows our home on Lake Conroe, and gives an idea of how bad the drought is in this area.

August 2011 – Busy Month!

A lot happened in August at PG. The 3 workers went to 3 different conventions. Frank went to Seneca IL, Esther went to Yellow Springs, OH, and Doris went to Downings, VA. Sharon Whalin traveled with Frank, Linda Ronhaar traveled with Esther, and Kathy and I traveled with Doris. The following is the workers picture from Yellow Springs with Esther on the far right:

There were several birthdays, our daughter Karin, Dad and Ronda. The following pictures show Mom with Karin and Dad.

Towards the end of the month Kent and Sharon Chappell brought Naomi Nicholson to PG to be our 9th resident. By coincidence Naomi and Esther (along with Linda, Kent and Sharon) were on the same plane from Cleveland OH to Houston. Kent, Sharon and I knew this was going to happen (though it actually was a coincidence), the others didn’t. The first picture below shows Esther and Naomi “running into each other” in the Cleveland airport. The second shows Kent and Sharon Chappell at PG.
