July 2011 – Hot and Dry!

A group of the Mexican friends from south Houston came to PG for a picnic on July 4th.  There were about 70 of us altogether.  Wonderful fellowship and food!

We had lots of visitors in July.  I’ll include some of their pictures.  If you move the mouse over a picture it’ll give you the title with some names.

Jason Munckton, a good friend of Lounells, came to visit before going with her to Happy and then into the work in Minnesota.  He told us his testimony one evening at PG.

Frank turned 72 in July.  He’s headed to Illinois in August for convention.  Kathy and I will be taking Doris to Downings.  Bea went to Happy.  So lots of travel this summer.

We’re half way through 2011 already!  All are well at Pecan Grove.  Doris has had some bad days, but is on the mend and is hoping to get to Downings in August.  Bea has gone to Dallas for a couple of weeks to visit her sister, so there are o7 residents here currently.  We’re looking forward to Naomi Nicholson coming to stay with us, arriving August 22nd, if all goes as planned.  Three sisters, Emma, Alice and Joyce (in the first picture below) are visiting at the moment, heading towards Happy. Ronda’s friend from Virginia, Sue Holladay, was here for a visit also.  For those who may have missed it, my sister Ronda is the manager at Pecan Grove now.

Doris had a birthday, and Michaela Dotson came and played for the residents.

We’re building a new farm house, where Terry and Kim Hoffman will live.  The old one they are in has a poor foundation, and will be torn down.  A group of Ronda and Mike’s relatives went swimming in the lake.  The picture below shows their mode of transportation.  I’ll refrain from any comments about neck color!

We’ve put grass eating carp in our 2 lakes.  The carp cleaned up the hydrilla in the small lake, so we’re trying to catch some of them and move them to the large lake. This shows me holding one of the carp and the large lake.  Note the hydrilla under the surface.

The drought hasn’t hurt the lily pads in the lake!  We do have some pecans on the trees, but this isn’t shaping up to be a good harvest.  The picture shows a baby pecan.

This is completely off topic, but for those of you who may know the family, we went to a family reunion for Kathy’s mom’s family in Medora ND, followed by convention at Dagmar, MT.  It was good to leave this HOT DRY climate and spend a week in the cold and WET.  The following picture is of Kathy’s mom’s two remaining sisters, Margie Willumsen and Jane Jacobson.  The second picture shows Kathy with a bunch of her cousins.  There is one guy, but he escaped before pictures were taken.

It’s really hot and dry here!  Things remain fairly green but the lakes are low.  The first picture below shows the Sr. Residence from the other side of the lake.  The wild hogs decided to tear up some of the pecan orchard, as you can see from the second picture below.

We’ve continued to have a lot of visitors in May.  Our good friends, Dominique and Mireille Mille, who currently live in New Caledonia (some French islands near New Zealand), were here for a visit.  This first picture shows them with Frank while Leona (my mom) is cutting his hair.  The second shows them with some of the PG residents, staff and volunteers.

The first picture below shows Bill Mahaffy, John and Pam Badertscher, along with PG residents.  The second is a big rabbit that’s been hanging out on the east side of the Sr. Residence.  Yes, we get all types of visitors here!

We had a very special visitor, Sharon Clark.  Her maiden name was Sharon Wahlin, a sister to Esther and Kenny.  My wife, Kathy, lived with Sharon in Minneapolis in the mid 70’s (along with a few other girls).  Sharon is deaf, so Kathy learned sign language from her.  Then Sharon decided to go to Gallaudet school for the deaf in Washington DC.  Kathy decided to go with her.  I was living around DC at the time… so that’s how Kathy and I met.  Kathy had a special birthday, so we had Sharon come down as a surprise for Kathy.  The picture below shows Kathy, Sharon Clark, and Sharon Wahlin (who was married to Kenny until he died).  Sharon Wahlin is in this north Houston field now with Sara Lacock.

There were two get togethers in this area on Memorial day.  One with about 40 at our home on Lake Conroe for those wanting to swim, boat, etc.   Another, also with 40 some, at Pecan Grove, of the Spanish friends from south Houston.  Here are a couple of pictures from the PG get together.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to be there, but we did get to sample some of the good food that was left over!

We currently have 8 residents at PG, and have plans for another to join us at the end of the summer.  We have room for 10, if we only have 1 per room.

April Without Showers!

All are doing well at Pecan Grove.  Esther Potts lost her hearing aid.   We’re hoping for some help to get another one.  All 8 residents were able to travel for union meeting on Sunday.

We continue to have a lot of visitors, and haven’t done well in getting pictures of all, but here are a few:

It’s very dry here!  A lot of Texas is on fire.  We’re fortunate in that respect, no fires around here, but we’re not fertilizing pecan trees this spring, it’s too dry.  We irrigate from the lake, but that’s not sufficient for nearly 1,000 pecan trees.  We’ve planted flowers, and as long as they’re watered, they do ok.  Here’s a recent work group working on the rose garden and some of the flowers.

We had lots of visitors in March, some in conjunction with our special meeting.  All 9 residents were able to attend the special meeting, which was about 35 miles from PG.  We were glad to have Irving Ross with us some during those days.

 

Unfortunately, Evelyn Kuck had to leave PG because her care needs were becoming more than we could supply.  Grace O’Keefe and Sara Riggs came down from Ohio and took her back with them to a care facility in Morrow, OH.  There are two other friends in the same facility with her, and several who visit regularly, so she is doing well there.  We sure miss her quiet, meek spirit at PG.  She hasn’t lost the desire to be a servant.  We’re glad for the time she spent with us since October 2009.  The first picture below shows Evelyn with Grace and Sara.  The second shows Doris giving some of the kids a ride.

Spring has sprung!  The pecan trees are much slower at growing leaves in the spring, see them to the right of the Wisteria below.  The’ve developed a lot more leaves since this picture was taken a few days ago.  Betty is helping Kiko with his spring shedding.

The bluebonnets are in.  Unfortunately the pictures below weren’t taken at the farm.  We planted some bluebonnets, then forgot where they were and mowed over them before they could bloom.  These pictures were taken near our home on Lake Conroe.

We’re glad to have Travis and Jamie Bolt living in Conroe now.  Travis works for Cormorant Engineering at Pecan Grove.  His grandparents, Ed and Leah Bolt, were here for the month of February.  His dad, David, also works for Cormorant but continues to live on the Newry PA convention grounds.
